Sian Costello is an artist from Boyle, but lives and works in Limerick City and is currently enrolled in fourth year Fine Art Painting BA (Hons) at Limerick School of Art and Design. Costello expresses a fascination with established art history and questions the persistence of painting in the digital age. By mining the history of visual art, she invents processes inspired by extinct technologies and re-contextualises obsolete imageries. Her current practise centres on the relationship between the artist, the subject, the ground and the time that binds these forces together. In contrast, she takes inspiration from the immediacy of photography and the live image upon the camera-screen. By contrasting these two experiences, she hopes to combine the fantastic nature of painting with the magic of seeing.
